World Lion Day

August 10th is World Lion Day!

Today, we celebrate these intelligent and fierce predators world wide, to raise awareness regarding conservation of lion populations and habitat. These big cats are beautiful, powerful and unique.

Did you know that a lion’s roar can be heard from 5 miles away! Their vocal folds form a square-shape, which allows them to roar very loudly without straining their lungs. Lions can also reach speeds of 50 mph and leap as far as 36 feet! They rely on short bursts of intense speed to catch their prey.

Together with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, we are committed to supporting lion conservation and healthy genetic diversity through special breeding programs. By visiting the Zoo, you are also helping to protect this threatened species.
